JNC யுடன் வைகை அணையில் இளம்பிறை

இளம்பிறையின் சார்பாக விடுதிகளில், ஆசிரமங்களில் தங்கிப் படிக்கும் சிறுவர்களை இன்பச் சுற்றுலா ஒன்றிற்கு  ஏற்பாடு செய்து வெளியே அழைத்துச் செல்ல வேண்டும் என்பது எங்களது நீண்ட நாள் ஆசையாக இருந்தது.  போடி JNC மலைவாழ் மாணவர் விடுதி மாணவ-மாணவிகளை தேனியிலுள்ள வைகை அணைக்கு அழைத்துச் சென்றதன் மூலம் எங்கள் ஆசை நிறைவேறியிருக்கிறது. முதலில் JNC மலைவாழ் மாணவர் விடுதியைப்பற்றி சொல்லவேண்டும். தேனி மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ள சிறுநகரமான போடிநாயக்கனூரில் அமைந்துள்ளது இந்த விடுதி. போடி மக்களின் பிரதான தொழில்களாக விவசாயமே திகழ்கிறது.  மலைகள்  சூழ்ந்த  குளிர் பிரதேசமான இங்கு ஏலைக்காய், மிளகு, டீ போன்றவை பெருமளவில் விளைவிக்கப்படுகிறது. போடியைச் சுற்றியுள்ள மலைப்பிரதேசங்களில் இன்னும் பல ஆதிவாசி மக்கள் வாழ்ந்து வருகின்றனர்.  சாலை, மின்சாரம், மருத்துவம் போன்ற அத்தியாவசிய வசதிகள் எதுவும் இல்லாத இடத்தில் மக்கள் கூடி வாழ்ந்து வருகின்றனர். அவர்கள் அனைவரும் ஏலைக்காய்,  டீ எஸ்டேட்களில் கூலி வேலைக்குச் செல்பவர்கள். சிறு வயதிலேயே  குடிப்பழக்கம்,  போதைப்பழக்கம்,  பால்ய விவாகம், ஒரு தம்பதிக்கு  சராசரியாக 10-12 என்று குழந்தைகள் என்று இன்றைய நவீன, முறையான கலாச்சார சூழழுக்கு கொஞ்சமும் பொருத்தமேமில்லாத ஒரு முறையற்ற, அடிப்படை தேவைகளே இல்லாத ஒரு வாழ்கையையே அந்த  மக்கள்  வாழ்ந்து வருகின்றனர்.

இத்தகைய சூழழில் பிறந்து வளரும் குழந்தைகளும் இவர்களைப் போல் ஆகிவிடக்கூடாது என்கிற நல்லெண்ணத்தில், திருச்சியயைச் சேர்ந்த திரு பென்ஜமின் என்பவரும் அவரது மனைவியாரும் போடியில் தங்கள் சொந்தப்  பணத்தில் ஒரு வீட்டை வாடகைக்கு எடுத்து, மலைவாழ் மக்களின் குழந்தைகள் சுமார் 35 பேருக்கு Jesus New Creation Ministryஎன்ற பெயரில் மாணவர் விடுதி ஒன்றைத் தொடங்கி இலவச கல்வி, உணவு,  இருப்பிடம் அளித்து வருகின்றனர். ஆதரவற்ற, கைவிடப்பட்ட குழந்தைககள் சிலரும் இதில் அடக்கம். 3 வயது முதல் அதிகபட்சம் 15 வரையிலான சிறுவர்-சிறுமிகள் இங்கு தங்கிப் படிக்கின்றனர். கி்றிஸ்துவ தம்பதிகளான இவர்கள் இது போல் ஆதரவற்ற ஏழைக் குழந்தைகளுக்குச் செய்யும் உதவி, கடவுளுக்கு தாங்கள் நேரடியாகச் செய்யும் சேவவை என்று நம்புகின்றனர். சத்தான அதே சமயம் அளவான சாப்பாடு இந்தக் குழந்தைகளுக்கு வழங்கப்படுகிறது. கடவுள் பக்தி, ஒழுக்கம், கட்டுப்பபாடு போன்றவற்றை மிகுந்த அன்போடு  கற்றுத்தருகின்றனர். குழந்தைகளும் ஒருவருக்கொருவர்  மிகுந்த பாசத்துடனும் 'அங்கிள் - ஆன்ட்டி'  மேல் அதிக மரியாதையுடனும் இருக்கின்றனர்.

மலைவாழ் மக்கள் தங்கியிருக்கும் இடத்திற்கு செல்வதே பெரும் கஷ்டம் என்று இந்தத் தம்பதியினர் கூறுகின்றனர்.  வெளியுலகம் அதிகம் தெரியாத இம்மக்கள் யாரோ இருவர் வந்து இலவச கல்வி கற்றுத் தருகிறோம்  என்று தங்கள் குழந்தைகளைக் கேட்டால் தந்துவிடுவார்களா?  மிகுந்த  போராட்டத்திற்குப் பிறகும்,  நிபந்தனைகளுக்கு உட்பட்ட பிறகும்தான் இவர்களால் குழந்தைகளை அழைத்து வர முடிகிறதாம்.  தினமும் காலையில் எழுந்தவுடன் கடவுள் வழிபாட்டுடன் ஒரு முறையான வாழ்க்கை முறையை  இந்தக் குழந்தைகளுக்கு கற்றுத் தருகின்றனர். திரு பென்ஜமின் அவர்கள்   திருச்சியில் பாதிரியாராக சேவை புரிந்து வருகிறார்.  அவரது மனைவி இங்கு போடியில் இந்தக் குழந்தைகளுடன் தங்கியிருக்கிறார். இந்தத் தம்பதிக்கு  இரண்டு மகன்கள். இருவரும் திருச்சியில் தங்கிப் படிக்கின்றனர். விடுமுறையானால் தாயைக்காண விடுதிக்கு வருகின்றனர்.  பெற்ற குழந்தைகளளைப் பிரிந்து அடுத்தவர் குழந்தைகளுக்காக பாடுபடும் இந்தத்  தம்பதியினர் எங்களுக்கு இன்னமும் ஒரு ஆச்சரியமாகவே விளங்குகின்றனர்.

இளம்பிறைக்கு ஆரம்பம் முதலே JNC யுடன் தொடர்பு இருந்து வருகிறது. சொல்லப்போனால் நாங்கள் முதன்முதலில் உதவி செய்த இடம் JNC தான். இந்த விடுதியிலிருந்து சுமார் 15 மாணவர்கள் போடி 1st வார்டு அரசுப் பள்ளியில் படிக்கின்றனர். எனது அம்மாவும் இதே பள்ளியில் தான் வேலை செய்வதால்தான் எங்களால் இந்த விடுதியைப் பற்றித் தெரிந்து கொள்ள முடிந்தது. மாணவர்களிடம் விசாரித்து பார்த்த போது இவர்கள் சொல்வது எதுவும் பொய்யில்லை என்பதும் உறுதியானது. முதலில் தங்களது சொந்த பணத்தை செலவழித்து வந்தவர்கள் பிறகு சமாளிக்க முடியாமல் பிறர் உதவியயை நாடினர். அப்படித் தான் இளம்பிறையின் மூலம் நாங்கள் செய்ய முன்வந்த சிறு உதவியையும் அவர்கள் ஏற்றுக்கொண்டனர். அரசிடமிருந்து  நிரந்தர உதவி பெறலாம் என்று நினைத்து அணுகியபோது அதிலுள்ள  சிக்கலான விதிமுறைகள் இவர்களை சுதந்திரமாக செயல்பட தடைசெய்யும்  விதமாய் அமைந்துள்ளதால் அந்த எண்ணத்தைக் கைவிட்டு கிடைக்கும் நன்கொடை,  உதவிகள் மூலமாக இந்த விடுதியை நடத்தி வருகின்றனர். இளம்பிறை சார்பாக இந்த விடுதியின் மளிகை செல்வுகளுக்காக மாதம் ரூ2000 கொடுத்து வருகிறோம்.

நாங்கள் சென்று வந்த சுற்றுலா பற்றி இனி. வைகை அணை என்பது தேனி மாவட்டததின் பிரதாண சுற்றுலா தளம். காமராஜர் முதலமைச்சராக இருந்த காலகட்டத்தில் இந்த அணையச் சுற்றி பூங்கா அமைத்து சுற்றுலாத் தளமாக  மாற்றியிருப்பதாகத் தெரிகிறது. அழகிய சோலையாக இன்றும்  பராமறிக்கப்பட்டு வரும் வைகை அணை பூங்காவின் Center of attraction யானை சறுக்குமரம் தான்.  ஒரு மிகப் பெரிய யானையின் பின்பக்கமாக ஏறி, முன் பக்கம் சறுக்கி வரும்படி அமைந்திருக்கும் இதில் குழந்தையாக இருக்கும் போது பல முறை ஏறி இறங்கி விளையாடியிருக்கிறேன். அந்த வித்யாசமான அமைப்பு என்றும் மனதை வவிட்டு அகலாது.  மற்றுமொரு குறிப்பிடத்தக்க விஷயம், தண்ணீர் குடிக்கும் அரக்கன் சிலை. இதுவும் பல வருடங்களாக பராமரிக்கப்பட்டு வருகிறது. இந்த அரக்கனும் பல வருடகாலமாக தொடர்ந்து தண்ணீர் குடித்துக் கொண்டேயிருக்கிறான்

வெளியே அழைத்துச் செல்லலாம் என்று முடிவு செய்தவுடனே குழந்தைகளிடம் எங்கு செல்லலாம் என்று கேட்டோம். அவர்களுக்கு எந்த இடத்தைச் சொல்வது என்று தெரியவில்லை. தேனிக்கு அருகில் இருக்கும் குழந்தைகளுக்கான ஸ்பாட் என்று பார்த்தால் அது இரண்டே இரண்டு இடங்கள் தான். ஒன்று தேனி - பெரியகுளம் ரோட்டில் அமைந்திருக்கும் ஸேரன்ஸ் ஃபன் பார்க் மற்றொன்று வைகை டேம். ஃபன் பார்க்கில் வீடியோ கேம்ஸ் இருக்கும், பட்டாம்பூச்சி தோட்டம் இருக்கும், பெரிய திரையில் கார்ட்டூன் படம் ஓடும். வைகை அணையில் யானையின் பின்புரத்தில் ஏறி, முன் புறமாக இறங்கும் சறுக்கு மரம் இருக்கும். “எங்கு போகலாம்?” என்று கேட்டதற்கு, குழந்தைகள் அனைவரும் ஒரு சேர சொன்ன பதில் யானை சறுக்கு மரம்!

முதலில் 22ஆம் தேதி தான் செல்வதாக முடிவு செய்திருந்தோம். ஆனால் அன்று புனித வெள்ளியானதால் குழந்தைகளை அழைத்துக்கொண்டு தேவாலயத்திற்கு செல்லவேண்டும் என்று கூறிவிட்டனர். பின்னர் 20ஆம் தேதி என்று முடிவு செய்து கேட்டபோது கொஞ்சம் பெரிய சிறுவர்களின் முகமெல்லாம் தொங்கிவிட்டது. அவர்களுக்கு இன்னமும் பரிட்சைகள் முடியவில்லையாம். உங்களை வேறு எங்காவது அழைத்துச் செல்கிறோம் என்று சொன்னதற்கு பதிலையே காணோம். சரி அவர்களை மட்டும் ஏன் வருத்தப்பட வைக்க வேண்டும் என்று இறுதியாக 23ஆம் தேதி என்று முடிவு செய்து 'வேன்' புக் செய்தோம். 23ம் வந்தது. கூடவே இடியுடன் கூடிய அடைமழையும் வந்தது. தேனியில் வெள்ளம் கரைபுரண்டு ஓடுவதாகவும், ப்ளானை கேன்ஸல் செய்யும் படியும் எனது அப்பா போன் செய்தார். ஹாஸ்டலுக்குப் போன் செய்து கேட்டால் சிறுவர்கள் அனைவரும் குதூகலமாகக் கிளம்பிக்கொண்டிருப்பதாகச் சொன்னார்கள். ஆனது ஆகட்டும் மழை பெய்தால் சும்மாவாவது தேனியைச் சுற்றி வரலாம் என்று வேனைக் கிளப்பி ஹாஸ்டலுக்குச் சென்றோம்.

குழந்தைகள் அனைவரும் வாசலிலேயே எங்களுக்காகக் காத்திருந்தனர். நாங்கள் அங்கு சென்றதும், வணக்கம், Praise the Lord, என்று எங்களை வரவேற்றனர். ஒவ்வொருவரும் தங்களிடம் இருப்பதிலேயே சிறந்த உடையை அணிந்து ஜம்மென்று ரெடியாகியிருந்தனர். எப்படா வேனிற்குள் செல்வோம் என்றிருந்தவர்களை 'ப்ரேயர்' செய்ய 'ஆன்ட்டி' உள்ளே அழைத்தார். அவசரவசரமாக கடவுளுக்கும் எங்களுக்கும் நன்றிகளைத் தெரிவித்துவிட்டு கண்ணிமைக்கும் நேரத்தில் வண்டியில் தங்களது இடத்தைப் பிடித்து அமர்ந்து கொண்டனர். இளம்பிறையின் சார்பாக நானும் என் அம்மாவும், JNC சார்பாக திரு பென்ஜமின் அவர்களும், அவரது மனைவியும். ஆக மொத்தம் 34 பேர் எப்படி அந்த வேனில் உட்கார்வது என்று யோசித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தோம். எந்தச் சிக்கலையும் தரவில்லை குழந்தைகள். ஆளாளுக்கு ஒருவர் மடிமீது ஒருவரை வைத்துக்கொண்டு எங்களுக்கும் அழகாக இடம் ஒதுக்கி வைத்திருந்தனர். சிலுசிலுவென்று காற்று அடிக்க சந்தோஷக்கரவெலியுடன் கிளபியது வேன்!

நாங்கள் செல்ல செல்ல சொல்லிவைத்தாற்போல் மழை குறைந்துகொண்டே வந்தது. தேனியை நெருங்கிய போது மழை விட்டிருந்தது. ஊரே வெள்ளக்கடாக இருந்தபோதும் நாங்கள் மிதந்து வைகை அணை நோக்கிப் பயணப்பட்டோம். தேனி டவுனிலிருந்து ஒரு 20 நிமிட பயணம். அவ்வளவு தான். நாங்கள் இறங்கியபோது மழை லேசாக தூறிக்கொண்டிருந்தது. வாசலில் டிக்கெட் எடுத்துக் கொண்டு உள்ளே சென்றோம். லேசான தூரல், சுற்றிலும் தண்ணீர், எதிரே குளுகுளுவென பிரம்மாண்டமான, அதே சமயம் ஆள் நடமாட்டம் அவ்வளவாக இல்லாத பார்க். அருமையான லொக்கேஷன்.

வந்த விஷயதைப் பார்ப்போம் என்று கேமராவை கையில் எடுத்துக் கொண்டு குழந்தைகளை போட்டோ எடுக்க ஆரம்பித்தேன். யானை சறுக்கு மரத்தை நோக்கி ஓடிய சிறுவர்களுக்கு ஏமாற்றமே மிஞ்சியது. சறுக்கி வரும் இடத்தில் பள்ளமாக இருந்ததால் குட்டை போல் தண்ணீர் தேங்கியிருந்தது :( அதையும் பொருட்படுத்தாமல், "நாங்கெல்லாம் யாரு?" என்று மூன்று சிறுவர்கள் அவசரவசரமாக பின்புரம் ஏறி முன்புறம் 'ஹே!' என்று சறுக்கி வந்து குட்டைக்குள் 'தொப்' பென்று லேண்ட் ஆகினர். முழுக்க நனைந்ததை அவர்கள் ஒரு பொருட்டாகவே எடுத்துக்கொள்ளாவில்லை. திரு பென்ஜமினும் அவரது மனைவியும் தான் பதறி அடித்துக்கொண்டு கையில் வைத்திருந்த துண்டால் அவர்களைத் துவட்டினர். மற்றவர்கள் ஆசைக்காக ஒரு முறை பின்வழி ஏறி பின் அவ்வழியே இறங்கி வந்தனர். யானையின் கீழே நின்று போட்டோ எடுத்துக்கொண்டனர். பின் ஒரு இடத்தை செலக்ட் செய்து சாக்லேட் சாப்பிட்டோம். மறுபடியும் ஆங்காங்கே போட்டோ எடுத்து கொண்டே நடக்க ஆரம்பித்தோம்.

இறுதியாக பூங்காவின் இறுதிப் பகுதிக்கு வந்து, அணையைப் பார்க்க படியேறி மேலே சென்று வந்த வழியே வைகை , மேகம் சூழ்ந்த மலைகளையும் ரசித்துக்கொண்டே நடந்தோம். அந்த சமயத்தில் குழந்தைகளிடன் பல விஷயங்களை பேச முடிந்தது. விளையாட விடாமல் மழை தடுத்திருந்தாலும் சந்தோஷம் சிறிதும் குறையவில்லை. அது வேண்டும், இது வேண்டும் என்று யாரும் விழுந்து உருளவில்லை. கூட்டத்தை விட்டு ஒரு நிமிடம் கூட விலகிச் செல்லவில்லை. இரண்டு இரண்டு பேராக கூட்டு சேர்ந்து கொண்டு கடைசி வரை ஒருவரை ஒருவர் "இருக்கிறார்களா" என்று பார்த்துக்கொண்டு பத்திரமாகவே நடந்தனர்.

ஆரம்பித்த இடத்திற்கே மறுபடியும் வந்து, மறுபடியும் ஒரு பெஸ்ட் ஸ்பாட்டை செலெக்ட் செய்து பிஸ்கட், மிக்சர் வரிசையில் நின்று இரண்டு ரவுண்டு வாங்கி சாப்பிட்டோம். தூரத்தில் இருந்த பெரிய மரத்தில் நிறைய வௌவால்கள் திங்கிக்கொண்டிருந்தன. அதையும் ஆச்சரியமாகப் பார்த்து 'எப்போ பறக்கும்?', 'எதுக்கு தொங்கிட்டு இருக்கு?' என்று ஒருவருக்கொருவர் கேள்வி கேட்டுக்கொண்டு பதில் சொல்லிக்கொண்டு இருக்கும் போதே காக்கைக் கூட்டம் வந்து எங்கள் அருகில் உட்கார்ந்தது. ஒருவன் பிஸ்கட் துண்டை ஒரு காக்கைக்கு போட, அதை பல காக்கைகள் எடுக்க முயற்சிதது. உடனே அவரவர் ஆளுக்கு கொஞ்சம் பிஸ்கட், மிக்சர் என்று போட ஆரம்பித்னர். எல்லோரும் சாப்பிட்டு முடித்த பிறகும் காக்கைகள் சுற்றி சுற்றி வரவே, ஒன்றக்கூட விடாமல் எல்லாவற்றையும் விரட்டியும் விட்டனர்!

வெளியே வந்து ஆளுக்கு ஒரு டீ சாப்பிட்டு விட்டு 'ரயில் பயணத்திற்கு' தயாரானோம். வைகை அணை பழைய இடமாக இருந்தாலும் குழந்தைகள் கூட்டம் அதிகமாயிருப்பதற்கு இந்த ரயிலும் ஒரு காரணாம். சும்மார் ஐந்து நிமிடத்திற்கு பார்க்கை ஒரு சின்ன ரயிலில் வைத்து சுற்றிக்காட்டுவார்கள். ஆளாளுக்கு ஒரு இடம் பிடித்து, சந்தோஷக் கூக்குரலிட்டு, கடைசி பெட்டியில் அமர்ந்திருந்த சிறுவர்கள் ரயில் ஓட்டுவது போல் பாவ்லா செய்து, கைதட்டி, மிகவும் ரசித்தனர் இந்த 'சிறிய' பயணத்தை. மதியம் மூன்று மணியளவில் பூங்காவினுள் நுழைந்த நாங்கள் மாலை ஆறு மணிக்கு சரியாக அங்கிருந்து கிளம்பினோம். ஹாஸ்டலில் அனைவரையும் இறக்கி விட அனைவரும் வந்து என் கைகளை மாறி மாறி பற்றிக்குழுக்கி நன்றி, தேங்க்ஸ், Praise the Lord சொல்லி கிளம்பிச் சென்றனர்.

மழை காரணத்தால் ஊஞ்சல், சறுக்கு மரம், ஸீ ஸா என்று எதையுமே இந்தக் குழந்தைகளால் விளையாட முடியவில்லை. இருந்தும் அவர்கள் இந்த டூரை சந்தோஷமாக ஏற்றுக்கொண்டனர். பள்ளி முடிந்தால் ஹாஸ்டல், மறுபடியும் காலையில் பள்ளி என்று போய்க்கொண்டிருக்கும் அவர்களது வாழக்கையில் வெளியே சென்றதே ஒரு பெரிய விஷயம் தான். திரும்பி வரும் போது ஒருவர் மீது ஒருவர் சாய்ந்து அசந்து தூங்கிக்கொண்டே வந்தது அவ்வளவு அழகு. JNC விடுதியுடனான எங்களது தொடர்பு என்றும் மாறாது. அங்கு தங்கியிருக்கும் ஒரு குழந்தைக்கு மாதம் ஒன்றிற்கு சராசரியாக ரூ500 செலவு ஆவதாகச் சொல்கிறார்கள். பத்தாவது எழுதியிருக்கும் ஒரு மாணவனுக்கு ஒரு பாட்டியைத் தவிர யாரும் இல்லை. அவனுக்கு மேலும் படிக்க விருப்பமிருந்தால் தேவையான உதவிகளை செய்வதாக வாக்களித்துள்ளோம். எட்டாவது முடித்திருக்கும் ஒரு பெண்ணிற்கோ பெற்றோர் இருந்தும் வீட்டிற்கு செல்ல முடியாத வேறு விதமான பிரச்சனை.

முதன் முறை நாங்கள் இந்த விடுத்திக்கு தங்கியிருந்த போது எங்களிடம் அழகாக மழலை மாறாமல் பேசி அசத்திய 'ஜீவாநிதி' என்கிற ஐந்து வயது குழந்தை இப்போது அங்கு இல்லை. அவளுக்கு பன்னும் டீயும் உயிராம். ஒரு முறை மலையிலிருந்து பார்க்க வந்த தந்தை பன்னும் டீயும் வாங்கி தருவதாக இங்கு வந்து கூட்டிக்கொண்டு சென்றிருக்கிறான். சென்றவன் குழந்தைக்கு பன்னும் டீயும் வாங்கிக்கொடுத்து விட்டு நேராக டாஸ்மாக்கிற்கு போய் உட்கார்த்திருக்கிறான். அங்கு ஏதோ பிரச்சனையாக போலீஸ் அவனை அள்ளிக்கொண்டு போயிருக்கிறது. இதையெல்லாம் பார்த்து பயந்துபோன ஜீவாநிதி அருகில் இருந்த பார்க்கில் ஒளிந்திருந்து பின் யார் மூலமோ ஹாஸ்டல் வந்து சேர்ந்திருக்கிறது. சிறிது நாட்களுக்குப் பிறகு மறுபடியும் வந்து தன் மகளை அழைத்துச் சென்ற அந்தக் குடிமகன் திரும்ப வரவேயில்லையாம்! ஜீவாநிதி வேறு ஏதோ ஹாஸ்டலில் தங்கியிருப்பதாக செய்தி மட்டும் வந்ததாம். அந்த பிஞ்சு மனம் வாடாமல் எங்காவது நன்றாக இருந்தாலே எங்களுக்குப் போதும்...

இது போல் இன்னும் எத்தனையோ கதைகள், எத்தனையோ பிஞ்சுக்குழந்தைகள், ஹாஸ்டல்கள், ஆசிரமங்கள், பள்ளிகள். இவர்களுக்கு இருக்கும் பிரச்சனைகளுடன் வைத்துப் பார்த்தால் நமக்கிருப்பதனைத்துமே 'ஒன்றுமே இல்லை' தான். அது இது என்று பேச மட்டும் செய்து, செயலாக ஒன்றுமே செய்யாமலிருந்து கடல் கடந்திருந்த நம்மவர்களைத் தான் கூண்டோடு காவு கொடுத்து விட்டோம். இங்கிருப்பவர்களுக்காவது நம்மால் முடிந்த உதவிகளை செய்வோம். பிரச்சனைகள் வேறு வேறு என்றாலும் கண்ணீர் ஒன்று தான். துயரம் துடைக்க முயற்சிப்போம்.

ஆதரவில்லாமல் தெருவில் கையேந்திப் பிழைக்க விடப்பட்ட குழந்தைகளின் நலனுக்காக 2003 ஆம் ஆண்டு 'சுயம்' எனும் தொண்டு நிறுவனம் தொடங்கிய பள்ளி - 'சிறகு'. அருகில் உள்ள செங்கல் சூளைகளில் வேலை செய்யும் ஏழைத் தொழிலாளிகளின் குழந்தைகளும் இந்தப் பள்ளியால் பயனடைகின்றனர். ஆவடியில் IAF காலனியையெல்லாம் தாண்டி இருக்கிறது இந்தப் பள்ளி. மொத்தம் 400 பேர் இங்கு கல்வி கற்கிறார்கள் என்று கூறப்படுகிறது. இளம்பிறையின் சார்பாக நாங்கள் சென்றது சனிக்கிழமையானதால், 120க்கும் குறைவாகவே குழந்தைகள் இருந்தனர். எங்கள் வேலைகளை முடித்துக் கொண்டு, நண்பன் சுந்தர் வீட்டில் நாங்கள் 21 பேர் குழுமி, அவனது அம்மா செய்து வைத்திருந்த அருமையான வெஜிடபிள் பிரியாணியை அவசரவசரமாக சுவைத்து விட்டு, அந்தப் பள்ளிக்குச் செல்லவே மதியம் மணி 1.30 ஆகிவிட்டது. அதற்குள் வேறொரு தொண்டு நிறுவனம் நடத்தும் ‘Weekly Feeding Program’ எனப்படும் இலவச மதிய உணவு வழங்குதல் முடிவடைந்து, 4கிலிருந்து 13 வயது வரையிலுள்ள சுமார் 120 குழந்தைகள் அங்கே குழுமியிருந்தனர். அக்குழந்தைகளைப் பார்த்தவுடன் அவர்களது நிலை நமக்குப் புரிந்துவிடுகிறது. அதைப் பற்றி விபரமாக பின் வரும் பத்திகளில் கூறுகிறேன். 

அந்தப் பள்ளியின் நிர்வாகி ‘Binnish’ எங்களை வரவேற்று நிகழ்ச்சிகளை தொடங்க ஏற்பாடுகள் செய்தார். மொத்தம் 8 அறைகள் இந்தப் பள்ளியில் இருக்கிறது. அதில் 5 அறைகள் மிகவும் பழைய நிலையில் சிதிலமடைந்து காணப்படுகிறது. மூன்று அறைகள் புதிதாக கட்டியிருக்கிறார்கள். எந்த அறையிலும் கரும்பலகை என்ற ஒன்று இருந்ததாக நினைவில் இல்லை. சுவற்றிலேயே ‘சாக்பீஸ்’ கொண்டு எழுதியிருந்தார்கள். மான்டிஸோரி டைப் பள்ளியென்பதால் கரும்பலகை உதவியில்லாமல் ‘சார்ட்’ முறையில் பாடம் நடத்துகிறார்கள்.

முதல் 10 நிமிடத்தில் அடுத்த 150 நிமிடத்தை இந்தப் பள்ளியில் எப்படி பயனுள்ளதாகக் கழிக்கப் போகிறோம் என்பதை முடிவு செய்தோம். அனைவருமே சிறுவர்கள் என்பதால் எங்களால் சமாளிக்க முடியுமா என்ற சந்தேகம் இருந்தது. இருந்தாலும் அவர்களுடன் பழகி, நட்பாகிவிட்டால் அனைத்தும் சுலபம் என்று நினைத்துக்கொண்டு ஆயத்தமானோம். மதியமாதலால் வெயில் வேறு கொளுத்தியெடுத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தது   காரிடாரில் குழந்தைகள் வரிசையாகக் குழுமியிருக்க, கடவுள் வாழ்த்துப் பாடலுடன் இனிதே ஆரம்பித்தோம். தியான முறையில் அமர்ந்து அவர்கள் சொன்ன மந்திரங்கள் முடிய 10 நிமிடத்திற்கு மேல் எடுத்துக்கொண்டது. நிலையான கடவுள் வாழ்த்து என்று ஒன்று இருப்பதாகத் தெரியவில்லை. அதுவும் நல்லது தான். மதசார்பற்ற முறை எங்களை மகிழ்விக்கவே செய்த்தது.

குழந்தைகளை 6 குழுவாகப் பிரித்து குழுவிற்கு எங்களிலிருந்து இரண்டு பேர் விதம், அங்கிருந்த அறைகளை ஆக்கிரமித்துக் கொண்டோம். முதலில் ஒவ்வொரு குழுவிற்கும் கையில் ஒரு வெள்ளைச் 'சார்ட்'டைக் கொடுத்து அவர்கள் குழுவிற்கு பொருத்தமாக பெயர்கள் வைக்கச் சொன்னோம். குழந்தைகளின் கற்பனைத் திறனுக்கு அளவேயில்லை என்பதை இதன் மூலமாக நாங்கள் தெரிந்து கொண்டோம். “ராக்கெட் ராஜா”வில் ஆரம்பித்து ஒவ்வொன்றும் ஒவ்வொரு பெயரை கூற, கடைசியாக 6 பெயர்கள் தேர்வு செய்யப்பட்டு, முறைப்படி மற்ற அணிகளுக்கு அறிவிக்கப்பட்டது. அந்தப் பெயர்களும், பெயர்க் காரணமும் பின் வருமாறு,

1) Cheetah - அதன் வேகத்திற்காக இந்தப் பெயரைத் தேர்வு செய்ததாகச் சொன்னார்கள்.

2) Ben 12 - 12 பேர் கொண்ட குழு என்பதால் இந்தப் பெயர். அதே போல் Ben10 மக்களைக் காப்பாற்றுவது போல் இவர்களும் நன்றாக படித்து ஏழை மக்களை காப்பாற்றுவார்களாம்.

3) சிறகு குட்டி ஜப்பான் - குட்டி ஜப்பான் என்பது அவர்களது பள்ளியின் கராத்தே க்ரூப் பெயராம்!

4) பதுங்கும் டிராகன், பாயும் புலி - இந்தப் பெயர் வைத்ததற்கு பெரிதாக ஒரு கதையை அவிழ்த்து விட்டார்கள். அதில் நினைவிலிருப்பது நமது தேசிய விலங்கான புலி, நம் நாட்டில் குறைவாக இருக்கிறது. அதை உணர்த்தவே இந்தப் பெயர் என்று ஒரு சிறுவன் சொன்னது

5) Dhoni - உலக்கோப்பையில் இந்தியா எப்படியும் ‘கப்’ அடிக்க வேண்டும் என்ற வெறியினால் இந்தப் பெயராம்!

6) கருணை இல்லம் - அனைத்து உயிரினங்களிடமும் அன்பாக இருக்க வேண்டும் என்பதை வலியுறுத்தி இந்த பெயராம்!

பெயர் வைக்கும் வைபவம் நடந்து முடிந்த பின் ‘ஓவியப்போட்டி’ ஆரம்பமானது. எல்லோருக்கும் ஒரு பென்சில், ஒரு குழுவிற்கு மூன்று கலர் பென்சில் டப்பாக்கள், மூன்று அழிப்பான் (Eraser / Rubber) கொடுக்கப்பட்டது. “இதைத்தான் வரைய வேண்டும் என்றில்லை எதை வேண்டுமானாலும் வரையலாம்” என்று சொன்னதால் அந்தக் குழந்தைகளின் கற்பனைத்திறன் எல்லை கடந்து ஓடியது. ‘தேசியக்கொடி’ வழக்கம்போல் இந்தப் பள்ளியிலும் நிறைய வரையப்பட்டது. வீடு, பூந்தொட்டி, இயற்கைக்காட்சி, தேவதை, முட்டையிடும் கடல் ஆமை(!), கிங் ஃபிஷெர் பறவை (நாங்கள் கொடுத்த கலர் பெசில் அட்டைப்படத்தைப் பார்த்து பலர் இதை வரைந்திருந்தனர்), ஒட்டகச்சிவிங்கியாகவும், டினோசராகவும் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளக்கூடிய ஒரு மிருகம், திசை காட்டும் காம்பஸ் (!) என்று பல விதமாக வரைந்து தள்ளிவிட்டனர். கடைசியில் பரிசு கொடுப்பதற்காக இந்தப் படங்களைப் பிரிக்க நாங்காள் பெரிதும் சிரமப்பட்டோம். ஓவியப் போட்டியின் போது இரண்டு சிறுமிகள் சாக்லேட் கொடுத்தால்தான் வரைவேன் என்று அடம்பிடிக்க, “சரி முதலில் வரைந்து முடி, தருகிறோம்” என்று சொன்னோம். ஒரு சிறுமி சரியென்று ஆவலாக தலையை ஆட்டி வரைய ஆரம்பிக்க, மற்றொரு சிறுமியோ எனக்கு ரெண்டு சாக்லெட் கொடுத்தால் தான் வரைவேன் என்று டிமேன்ட்ஸை ஏற்றி விட்டது. இரண்டு சாக்லெட்டை வாங்கிக்கொண்டு தான் வரைய ஆரம்பித்தது என்றால் பார்த்துக் கொள்ளுங்கள்.

படத்தைப் பெரிதாக்கிப் பார்க்கவும்

ஓவியப் போட்டி நடந்து கொண்டிருக்கும் போது தான் கவனித்தோம். இரு சிறுவர்கள் எந்த குழுவிலும் இல்லாமல் அங்குமிங்கும் ஓடிக்கொண்டிருந்தனர். “என்னடா?” என்று பிடித்துக் கேட்டால் “எங்களுக்கு அம்மை போட்டிருக்கிறது” என்று தழும்பைக் காட்டுகிறார்கள். எங்களுக்கு தூக்கிவாரிப்போட்டது. அந்தச் சிறுவர்களை அமைதியாக ஒரு இடத்தில் அமர வைக்கலாம் என்றால் அவர்கள் கேட்பதாக இல்லை. அப்பொழுதுதான் கவனித்தோம் - அந்தப் பள்ளியில் வேலை செய்யும் யாரையும் காணவில்லை. குழந்தைகளை எங்களிடம் விட்டு விட்டு அவர்கள் ஒரு அறையில் ஒதுங்கிக்கொண்டார்கள். Cheetah குழுவிலிருந்த ஒரு மூன்று வயது சிறுவனுக்கோ இருமல் நிற்காமல் வந்து கொண்டேயிருக்கிறது. கண்ணிலும், மூக்கிலும் தண்ணீர் வந்து கொண்டேயிருக்கிறது. இருமிக்கொண்டே தான் வரைந்த படத்திற்கு கலர் அடிக்கமுடியாமல், கலர் பென்சிலை வைத்துக் கிறுக்கிக் கொண்டிருந்தான்.

படத்தைப் பெரிதாக்கிப் பார்க்கவும்

போட்டோ எடுத்துக் கொண்டே வரும்போது தான் கவனித்தோம், ஒரு சிறுவனுக்கு காலில் பெரிய, ஆராத காயம் ஒன்று இருந்தது. ஆனால் அவன் அதை பொருட்படுத்தவேயில்லை. வரைவதிலேயே கண்ணாக இருந்தான். மற்றுமொரு சிறுவனுக்கு பின்மண்டையில் அடிபட்டு கட்டு போடப்பட்டிருந்தது. முதலில் ஒருவன் தள்ளிவிட்டு கீழே விழுந்ததால் அடி என்றான் ஆனால் விசாரித்ததில் தான் தெரிந்தது அவனது பெற்றோர் அடித்ததால் ஏற்பட்ட காயமாம். எது உண்மை என்று தெரியவில்லை. மேலும் பல சிறுவர்களுக்கு உடலெங்கும் சின்னச் சின்னக் காயங்கள், முதுகு முழுவதும் உடைந்த பருக்கள், வாயில் எச்சில் புண்கள், தேமல், அழுக்கு என்று நாங்கள் பார்த்த யாருமே உடல்ரீதியாக நலமாக இல்லை.

ஓவியப் போட்டி முடிந்து ஒவ்வொரு குழுவிற்கும் ஒவ்வொரு தலைப்பு வழங்கப்பட்டது. அந்தத் தலைப்பிற்கேற்ப அவர்களை தயார் செய்தனர் நண்பர்கள். நடுநடுவே காந்தி, நேரு, அம்பேத்கார், பகத் சிங், நேத்தாஜி, கல்பன சாவ்லா, சச்சின் போன்ற பிரபலங்களை அடையாலம் காணும் போட்டியும் நடந்தது. எந்தப் படத்தைக் காட்டினாலும் அம்பேத்கர் என்றே சொல்லி ஒரு வழியாக சாக்லெட்டை வாங்கிய சிறுவனை மறக்கவே முடியாது. நாங்கள் இந்த முறை செய்த மாபெரும் தவறே "சாக்லேட்" தான். பல சிறுவர்கள் "அண்ணா அண்ணா" என்று பின்னடியே வந்ததும், சிலர் அழுக ஆரம்பித்ததும், ஒரு சிறுமியோ மொட்டை வெயிலில் கிரவுண்டில் படுத்தபடி "சாக்லேட் வேணும்; கொடுக்கவில்லையென்றால் வர மாட்டேன்" என்று அடம்பிடித்ததும்... யப்பா, சமாளிப்பதற்குள் பெரும் பாடாகி விட்டது. அதிலும் ஒரு பொடியன் நாங்கள் இறுதியாகக் கிளம்பும் போது என் வயிற்றில் ஒரு குத்து குத்தி "எனக்கு அந்த பெரிய சாக்லேட் தந்தியா?" என்று கேட்டான்.  

கடைசி ஒரு மணி நேரம் தாங்கள் இதுவரை கற்றுக்கொண்டதை மற்றவர்களுக்கு ஒவ்வொரு குழுவாக வந்து விளக்கிக் காட்டினார்கள். சில சிறுமிகள் அருமையாக பாடிக்கொண்டே நடனமாடினர். ப்ளாஸ்டிக் ஏன் உபயோகிக்கக்கூடாது என்று ஒரு சிறுவன் சொன்னது இன்னமும் என் நினைவில் நிற்கிறது. சென்னை வழக்கு தமிழில் அவ்வளவு விளாவாரியாக யாருமே இதுவரை ப்ளாஸ்டிக்கின் தீமைகளைச் சொன்னதில்லை. ஒருவழியாக அனைவரையும் முக்கால் பாகமாவது திருப்திபடுத்திவிட்டு பரிசுகள் வழங்கினோம். அதிலும் சில குழந்தைகள் தங்களுக்கு பரிசு கிடைக்கவில்லை என்று அழுகையைப் போட்டனர்.

இளம்பிறை சார்பாக இந்தப் பள்ளிக்கு மாதம் 2000ரூ - 3000ரூ வரையான மளிகை செலவுகளை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளலாம் என்று தான் முதலில் முடிவு செய்திருந்தோம். ஆனால் இந்தப் பள்ளிக்கு சென்று வந்த பிறகு முதலில் இவர்களுக்கு மருத்துவ உதவிதான் தேவை என்று தோன்றுகிறது. ஒரே இடத்தில் ஒன்றுக்கொன்றாய் சிறுவர், சிறுமியர் வாழ்கின்றனர். தொற்று வியாதிகள் பரவும் அபாயம் அளவிற்கதிகமாயிருக்கிறது. கொஞ்சம் சுத்தமாக எந்த அழுக்கு அறிகுறியும் இல்லாமல் ஒரு சில குழந்தகள் இருக்கின்றார்கள். விசாரித்ததில் தான் தெரிந்தது அவர்கள் எல்லாம் இந்தப் பள்ளியில் வேலை செய்பவர்களது குழந்தைகளாம்! அவர்களை மட்டும் அவ்வபோது யாராவது ஒருவர் 'வாட்ச்' செய்துகொண்டிருப்பது போலவும் தோன்றியது. மூக்கிலும், கண்ணிலும் நீர் ஓடிக்கொண்டே இருக்கிறது, இறுமி இறுமி முகமே சிவந்து போய்விட்டது அந்தச் சிறுவனுக்கு. சுற்றிப் பார்த்தால் பள்ளி நிர்வாகிகள் யாரும் அருகில் இல்லை. அவர்களை தேடிக் கண்டுபிடித்து இந்த சிறுவனை ஒப்படைத்தால், அடுத்த ஐந்து நிமிடத்தில் மறுபடியும் இறுமிக்கொண்டே ஓடி வந்துவிடுகிறான். அவனைப் பிடித்து படுக்க வைக்க அங்கு ஆள் இல்லை! இளம்பிறை நண்பர்கள் தங்கள் மடியில் அந்தப் பயலைப் படுக்க வைத்தனர்...

எப்படியாவது ஒரு மருத்துவரைப் பிடித்து, மாதம் ஒரு முறை மருத்துவ முகாம் ஒன்றிற்கும், அவசர கால உதவிக்கும் ஏற்பாடு செய்ய வேண்டும் என்பதே எங்கள் அனைவரது எண்ணமும். கண்முன்னே இத்தனைக் குழந்தைகள் உடல்நலக் குறையோடு இருப்பதைப் பார்க்கும் போது மிகவும் வருத்தமாக உள்ளது. 'சிறகு' பள்ளி நிவாகிகள் சரியில்லை என்று சொல்லவரவில்லை. அவர்களால் முடிந்ததை அவர்கள் செய்கிறார்கள். ஆங்கிலம் வழியில் கல்வி கற்றுத் தருகிறார்கள், சொல்வதைக் கேட்டுப் புரிந்து கொள்ளும் திறன் அந்த மாணவர்களுக்கு இருக்கிறது, யோகா கற்றுத் தருகிறார்கள், கராத்தே கற்றுத் தருகிறார்கள், ஹிந்தி கூட கற்றுத் தருகிறார்கள் போலும். ஆனால், மிக முக்கியமான விஷயங்கள் பல இந்தப் பள்ளியில் இல்லை. சுத்தம், சுகாதாரம், நல்ல உடை, ஆரோக்கியமான உணவு, பகிர்ந்துண்ணும் பழக்கம் போன்றவை மிஸ்ஸிங்! பல குழந்தைகளிடம் பிடிவாதம் அதிகமிருக்கிறது. சில குழந்தைகளிடம் முரட்டுத்தனமும் அதிகமிருக்கிறது. மிக முக்கியமாக கையேந்தும் பழக்கத்தை பல குழந்தைகள் இன்னும் விடவில்லை. ஒரு நல்ல விஷயத்திற்காக இந்தப் பள்ளியை தொடங்கியவர்கள், முதலில் இந்தப் பழக்கத்தை இந்தக் குழந்தைகளிடமிருந்து முற்றிலுமாக அழித்திருக்க வேண்டாமா?

பொருள் ரீதியாக, பண ரீதியாக இந்தப் பள்ளிக்கு உதவிகள் தேவை. ஆனால் அதை விட முக்கியமாக மேற்சொன்ன விஷயங்கள் தேவை. 'சுயம்' கவனிக்க...

'சிறகு' பள்ளிக்கு இளம்பிறை உங்களை அன்புடன் வரவேற்க...

எங்களது ‘இளம்பிறை’ அறக்கட்டளையை பற்றி ஏற்கனவே இந்தப் பதிவில் குறிப்பிட்டு இருந்தேன். அதை பார்த்து எங்களைத் தொடர்ப்பு கொண்ட நண்பர் முத்துராமலிங்கம் அவர்களுக்கு முதலில் எங்களது நன்றிகள்.

இளம்பிறை அறக்கட்டளையின் மூலம் நாங்கள் நண்பர்கள் ஒன்று சேர்ந்து எங்களால் முடிந்த உதவிகளை ஏழை மாணவர்களுக்குச் செய்து வருகிறோம். அதன் தொடர்ச்சியாக ஆவடியில் அமைந்துள்ள ‘சிறகு’ என்னும் பள்ளிக்கு இளம்பிறையின் சார்பாக நாங்கள் உதவ இருக்கிறோம். இந்தப் பள்ளி 2003 ஆம் ஆண்டு ‘சுயம்’ என்னும் அறக்கட்டளையால் நிறுவப்பட்டதாகும். இந்தப் பள்ளி நிறுவப்பட்டதன் முக்கிய காரணமே, பெற்றோர்களால் பிச்சைக்காரர்களாக விடப்பட்ட ஏராளமான ஏழைக் குழந்தைகள் கல்வி கற்க வேண்டும் என்பதற்காகத் தான். அருகில் உள்ள பொருளாதார வசதியில் மிகவும் குறைந்த 400க்கும் மேற்பட்ட சிறுவர்கள் இங்கு இலவச கல்விப்பயன் அடைகிறார்கள்.

பெற்றோர்களிடமிருந்து வந்த கடும் எதிர்ப்புகளையெல்லாம் சமாளித்து 150க்கும் அதிகமான, வீதியில் பிச்சை எடுக்க விடப்பட்ட குழந்தைகள்  இந்தப் பள்ளியிலேயே தங்கியிருந்து பெரும் பயனடைகின்றனர். இவர்களுக்கு இலவசக் கல்வியுடன் சேர்த்து, உண்ண உணவு, இருக்க இடம் என்று அனைத்தும் இலவசமாக வழங்கப்படுகிறது. பள்ளிநாட்களில் அனைவருக்குமே மதிய உணவும் வழங்கப்படுகிறது. பல்வேறு இடங்களிலிருந்து பல உதவிகள் இந்தப் பள்ளிக்கு வந்தாலும், 400 குழந்தைகளுக்கு மேல் என்பதால் இவர்களால் பல செலவுகளை சமாளிக்க முடியவில்லை என்பதை நாங்காள் அறிந்து கொண்டோம். அதனால் இளம்பிறையின் சார்பாக, மாத மளிகைச் செலவை மட்டுமாவது ஏற்றுக்கொள்வது என்று முடிவு செய்திருக்கிறோம்.

அதன் பொருட்டு வரும் சனிக்கிழமையன்று (19 March 2011) மதியம் 01 மணிக்கு மேல் இந்தப் பள்ளிக்கு நாங்கள் செல்கிறோம். அங்கு தங்கிப் படிக்கும் மாணவர்களுக்கு ஓவியப் போட்டியில் ஆரம்பித்து பல்வேறு போட்டிகளையும், விளையாட்டு நிகழ்ச்சிகளையும், அறிவுசார் நிகழ்ச்சிகளையும் ஏராளமான பரிசுகளோடு நடத்த இருக்கிறோம். அந்தப் பள்ளியை நடத்தி வரும் ‘சுயம்’ அறக்கட்டளையினருடனும் விவாதிக்க உள்ளோம்.

One day camp @ Vergal Trust, Kancheepuram

“Well Begun is Half done” – There can be no other apt sentence to describe Ilampirai’s initiative at Vergal Trust, Kanchipuram.
It all started with meticulous planning for more than a week and drafting a detailed agenda. The roles and responsibilities were clearly distributed among volunteers. We were all eagerly looking for the D-Day. The plans were rehearsed during our travel to Kanchipuram and we reached there proudly wearing our Ilampirai identity cards.
We were welcomed by Mrs.Nalini and other coordinators of the Vergal Trust and the children had made a special welcome chart for us. We decided to finalize on the agenda while the children completed their prayers and proceeded for breakfast. We were also given sprouted beans for refreshing ourselves.
Once the stage was all set, the children started the day’s proceedings by singing songs. Sundar initiated our agenda by giving a brief introduction about Ilampirai and without any delay; we split the groups of children into 6 subgroups based on the colors in rainbow (Violet, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red) with 2 Ilampirai members taking care of each group. Each team was given a chart and asked write a team name followed by the names of all team members. In addition to this, they were asked to identify a team song which they can sing on stage.
The first activity planned was Theme based discussion in which a topic was provided to each team to discuss upon. Initially the volunteers gave an idea of what the topic is all about and basic information on how to involve in a group discussion. The topics were mainly on social awareness and basic general knowledge. Later the team members were asked to discuss among themselves about various points they can think based on the theme. The children also learnt the importance of knowledge sharing and listening to other’s opinions.
Final phase of this activity involved each team preparing a skit based on their theme and presenting it to the audience after introducing their team and team song. The children displayed a lot of enthusiasm and presence of mind while presenting their topics and they were judged based on various parameters.
The next activity was a very interesting one which we named as ‘passing info’. This activity aimed at making the children understand and learn the art of listening. The children were asked to sit in a circle and first child was told a small story which contains some names, places and things. The child has to retell the story to the next child without missing any of the key items told and this goes on till the last child. The last child in the group has to tell the complete story to the group. The relevance of this story to the original version is judged. Yellow and Red teams excelled in their presentations and grabbed the honors.
Though all of the teams were unable to convey the exact story and ended up with many hilarious versions, both the children and we, volunteers learnt from this practical example about the importance of listening skills.
Following passing info activity, there was a small talk by Ramya on how to prepare well for exams and to tackle exam fever. Students interacted well and took some valuable tips on the same. Just after this session, we had a lunch break. We were served with very delicious and healthy food which we ate alongside the children. We were impressed to see that not even a small amount of food was wasted by anyone. Refreshed by a great lunch, we were ready to start our afternoon interactive sessions.
The first on the agenda was Treasure Hunt. While the morning sessions were on, some of our volunteers had made arrangements for this event. They hid some items wrapped in a gift wrapper at various locations in and around the venue. Each team was given a list with clues leading to the identification of items. The children were asked to first identify them and go in search for the items. Though there was a delay due to rain, a small break was sufficient to complete this event. It was fun to see children running around to find the maximum number articles. We had the Violet and Orange teams triumphant with 4 items each.
The centerstage was handed over to our quiz master Alagar. He kept the children and audience enthralled with questions from various fields. The round which involved Tamil grammar and Tamil authors impressed everyone and we were held by surprise when the children were equally good in cracking the questions. The first round was done in counter clockwise direction and the following one in clockwise. The final round was a rapid fire with consecutive questions fired at each team and they have to answer all of them as soon as possible. After an hour long of battle of brains, the Blue and Green Team emerged victorious.
As we came to the close of the day, motivational videos were screened to the children and the messages had a great impact on them. Songs were sung by the children frequently in order to keep themselves engaged. There was also an interesting rain clap where the children started clapping using one finger and then increasing the finger count by one and finally we could hear a downpour from the claps and the rain clap subsided to a drizzle and cam to a halt.
Another aspect is the habit to gain the attention of children and maintaining an order by saying “Hi” and responding with “Hello”. Though it was done very frequently, it indeed provided an interest.
The organizers of the Vergal Trust gave a small speech in which they praised the way in which we presented various topics in different perspective. Prizes were distributed for all the events and each team had their photos taken with their volunteers. Since we had diwali around the corner, the volunteer who had planned for an art & craft class presented hand made greeting cards to the children and volunteers. The camp ended with a motivational song, “We Shall Overcome”, the anglicized version of “Hum Honge Kamyaab”. All the children bade us Good Bye with wishes for Diwali.
This report is incomplete without thanking all the volunteers who had planned and executed this to perfection. There were a lot of learnings to take back and improve upon as well. Being the first activity after Ilampirai being registered as a Public Charitable Trust, it was indeed a successful one and a motivational factor for all such initiatives to follow.
To sum it up, it was a worthy Sunday for Ilampirai to be proud of.

Event Description:

With the welcoming cool weather in the fine morning , our team “ILAMPIRAI” reached the Nemilichery home by  10.30 AM with a warm welcome by Mr Vaanarsan, wherein the home was a small residential house comprising of nearly 25 kids who vary in their education levels from 1st class to 10th class. Our team has planned a series of activities for entertaining and introduced the activity based learning to the kids for the duration of nearly 2 hours.

The series of activities planned were as follows:
-          Segregation of kids into 4 teams managed by a ILAMPIRAI member for each team.
-          Team Introduction with a guest performance and a logo designed by the kids
-          Quiz activity having following rounds:
a)      Jumbled words
b)      General knowledge round
c)      Test your memory round
-            Announcement of Winners  and distribution of prizes

As per the plan, there was a perfect alignment of the teams according to their education level. Four equal teams were divided and the game started. Kids were more amazing when they were given with a chart and asked to prepare a team name and logo. There was an excellent spirit in them that made them to design their team name and logo in just 10minutes. The team names were as follows:
-          Team A: Super Singer
-          Team B: Siruthai
-          Team C: Super Guys
-          Team D: Tiger
-         
While preparing for the round 1, we thought that the kids would find it difficult to go with the jumbled words but overwhelmed to see the response of the kids in all teams answering to each and every jumble and bagged their points. In the same way the second and third round proceeded with a good response from the kids making us surprising when they answered to the questions even if they took some time.

Last but not the least is the prize distribution, and the winning team Siruthai accompanied by Gunasundari and the runners team Tiger accompanied by Muthuram got their trophies.
Chocolates and stationary set were provided to each and every kid wherein we saw their faces to be happier after receiving it. Notebooks and uniforms were distributed at the end to each and every kid which was the main agenda of our visit.

This visit made all of us happy after seeing the SMILES of the kids.

Dental camp @ Siragu School, Avadi

Dental Camp at Siragu Montessori School was one of the prime activities which were planned after Ilampirai’s first visit to Siragu. The major issue we could see in Siragu during our first visit was that the health and hygiene of the children were of a very low standard. It was a first of its kind for Ilampirai to organize such an initiative which required a great support from volunteers and dental college students.

First of all, Ilampirai takes this opportunity to thank the students’ team from Government Dental College who whole-heartedly agreed to be a part of this initiative. The team consisted of around 10-12 students and 1 professor from the Government Dental College. Some new hands joined this time with Ilampirai to volunteer for this service and to strengthen the Ilampirai team. Also, we had the required co-operation from the support staff at the school for organizing this camp.

Ilampirai team reached the school at time and made sure that the required facilities have been done to facilitate the dental camp. Two spacious rooms had been allotted for the check up. The team provided the basic requirements to the doctors like drinking water, water & dettol to sterilize medical equipments and garbage bucket to dump used cotton and other disposable stuff.

The check-up started on a class by class basis starting from the Kindergarten to 8th standard.  A basic check up was done by a panel of students in the first room. Based on their diagnosis, the prescriptions were provided in a slip which was taken to the other panel of doctors in the next room.

The second panel of students examined the children based on the slips that were given to them and were advised on basic cleanliness like gargling water and brushing. The children who were found to have dental problems were asked to visit the dental hospital the next day. The staff available for each class collected the slips from the children.

The students’ team expressed their happiness for being a part of this activity and provided an assurance to support us for such cause. The team started from the school after having their lunch.

In the second part of the day, we had a discussion with Mrs.Uma who is taking care of the Siragu Montessori School. We discussed on how the idea of starting a school for children from begging community came into existence and the various hurdles faced during the process.
Mrs.Uma explained that most of the development activities are taken care by getting loans from banks .The outstanding debt amount is nearly 50 Lakhs and they are trying to repay the loans slowly. She emphasised on the fact that the continuous support to these homes is what inspires them to do more to these needy children.

When inquired about the health & hygiene of the children, she admitted that since the children are coming from a community where medical facilities are scarce, the children are indeed frequently getting ill. She also told that these children are not being given the allopathic medicines unless the situation is worse. In most of the cases, they are practicing the natural way of healing by giving them proper rest. Though this seems to be a measure to avoid side effects due to the medicines, still it can create some serious complications in children.

Ilampirai Team mentioned that they saw a boy begging at road signal. He was one of the students of the school. Uma told with regret that the parents of these children are not allowing them to go to school on weekends and instead they were sending them for begging. She also said that few of the children are very mischievous and they need to be given special care. Some of them go around breaking things and it had become difficult to keep them under control. The discussion gave various insights into the way the school is run and the practical difficulties involved.
Later, we spent the rest of the day with the school children entertaining them. Most of them were able to identify us from our previous visit. They even remembered the team names that they had kept. Each of them expressed their talents like music, dance, karate, etc.., Finally, we distributed biscuits to all the children and started from the school back to our homes.

To sum it up, it was a great first initiative and gave us the inspiration to conduct many more such visits.

A journey to BODI

Introduction
            The Ilampirai initiative is ignited on 27 May 2010 to provide  educational support to  deserving kids who have NONE to fuel their interests. Ilampirai laid its first stone to construct the bridge between the noble and the needy in Bodi on August 06 2010. The day made a remarkable happiness among ilampiraians and the kids over there made the mode  precious to evryone.

Site Details
            Bodi is a place in southern part of Tamilnadu, more like a forest range. Ilampirai found two schools;  government school, Bodi and  Sillamarathupatty panchayat union school that has been teaching students from tribal background . The children in this school did not turn up for classes owing to the fact that they did not have proper school uniforms,school bags etc.

Infrastructure

 Government School Bodi

• The government school has classes up to 8th Standard.
• The school has only 2 buildings to accommodate the children.
• The buildings are not very old at the same time they are not recently built.

 Tribal Kids Hostel

• The tribal hostel is being run by the Pasteur and an in charge, currently they are in the rented house.
• The toilet and the sanitation facilities are not in that much good condition.
• The electricity connection is also not proper as they are managing with a CFL lamp without fan.
• As they are not funded enough to meet their grocery expenses, the children are liable to lack nutrients in the food.

Education
  
Government School Bodi

• Most of the children in the school are from tribal background. The teachers there are doing an excellent job. These teachers have more responsibilities like teaching behavior, discipline , presenting oneself to these children, in the first place, rather than teaching them subjects.
• The children are sharper enough to identify the national leaders, their curiosity in grasping the new things is outstanding and the energy that the kids had while doing the performance is tremendous.
• The children are able to answer the basic questions related to their subjects and also in general knowledge.
• The children are having the clear vision towards their future goal.

Health
            The children had never been exposed for a medical checkup. If a children is ill, then proper        treatment is given to the kid with care.

Requirements in the Hostel

• They need the financial support in paying rent for the house.
• They also need contributions to meet their monthly expenditure for food.
• The children are not having proper clothes to wear.
• The children needs to be exposed for a medical check up in a regular basis
• The children can be educated more in the communication skill to survive in the competitive world.

Our Contribution

• We contributed 50 school uniforms to the kids who are really poor in the Sillamarathupatti panchayat union school.
• We also donated Rs,10000 to a specially challenged girl, who has been doing teacher training. This money would be used for her treatment, so that she would be able to take care of the kids thee in the school as she wishes.
• We conducted quiz and drawing competition to the kids in the school. Each child had a goal and claer cut vision about the future. We also served food at the kids at hostel and spent some time with them playing and chatting- after all this is what they have been looking for all the time!!
• We presented cricket bats, foot ball for the kids to play in the school.
• We had lunch along with the kids and enjoyed a lot with them.

Suggestions from Team

• The grocery expenses can be shared to reduce their burden in providing the food to the children.
• Each kid needs to be groomed to become a point of contact to uplift their community people.
